Gabrielle Union And Aja Naomi King To Star In Nate Parker’s Nat Turner Biopic
Last summer we spoke with Nate Parker about directing his own film about the life of slave revolt leader Nat Turner. In our interview, Parker announced film’s title would be “The Birth of a Nation,” as a response to the controversial 1915 film of the same title, and now we have more details about the biopic’s cast.
Shadow And Act reports the current cast for the film will include How To Get Away With Murder’s Aja Naomi King, Aunjanue Ellis, Colman Domingo, Dwight Henry, Roger Guenveur Smith, Gabrille Union and Arnie Hammer. Parker, who wrote the script for the film, will play the lead of Nat Turner and also direct the project. Filming started last September in Savannah, Georgia, just two months after Nate said this to us about the movie:
“I’m very excited about it. I think it will show the first true representation of resistance that we will have. We do have fictional films like Django, but I think we have to realize we don’t have to fictionalize anyone. All we have to do is look into our history and see we have heros who have stood on our behalf.”
“The Birth of a Nation” is debut to 2016 and will be produced by Bron Entertainment. Check out our full interview with Nate Parker below.
