Pass Or Play? Deborah Cox Returns With R&B Ballad “More Than I Knew”
When I heard Deborah Cox re-record some of Whitney Houston’s greatest hits for Lifetime’s Whitney biopic, I was reminded why I fell in love with her as a tween. So of course, I was thrilled when I learned that the wife and mom of two was in the lab working on her sixth studio album Work of Art. However, I have to also admit that I was slightly concerned that she would withhold the sweet-sounding R&B ballads that caused me to become a fan in the first place.
Often times, when artists return after a lengthy hiatus, they dramatically alter their sound to the point where their music becomes unrecognizable to their core audience. Thankfully, Deborah hasn’t done that—at least judging by her new single she hasn’t.
The 40-year-old songbird recently premiered ballad “More Than I Knew,” which tells the unfortunate story of a woman who didn’t realize what she had in a former lover until it was too late. At the same time, she questions whether or not she made the right decision when she chose to leave what seemed to be a bad situation at the time. It’s absolutely beautiful and just may cause you to shed a tear if you’ve ever found yourself in a similar situation.
For me, “More Than I Knew” is definitely a pass. But let us know what you think!
