Nevada based SmartTouchMedia company launched a disturbing app that has been recently pulled from the Amazon and Andriod app store. The program, named “Rescue The Anorexia Girl” was a game similar to that of a whack-a-mole game. Instead of whacking a mole, game users had to throw food at the character who was dubbed “anorexia girl.” According to Cosmopolitan, the description from the game read as followed:
“Anorexia is a serious disease and fatal if not cured in time. When you have anorexia, the desire to lose weight becomes more important than anything else. For example a girl from new Rescue The Anorexia Girl Free game has started to renounce meals and even tasty cakes cannot save the situation. But now you have come, brave hero and you can save her. We believe in you! HOW TO PLAY: The game mechanic is the same as in whack a beaver games — tap to give the girl a cake. Every time you miss the girl loses weight. So, be careful and don’t let the girl die!”.
If you miss the character, she will start to lose weight and eventually die. In a statement to The Independent, a representative from Amazon said: “All apps in the Amazon App Store must adhere to our content guidelines and the app in question is no longer available from our store.”
Anorexia is among the top causes of mental health-related deaths in the United States with over 1.6 million people diagnosed with the eating disorder. Slate says that Black women are most likely to report binge eating, vomiting, fasting or laxative abuse. The Renfrew Center told Slate: [C]onflicts around body image and using food to manage emotions—you’re going to see that in women of color. It just may manifest itself in a different way.”
