As ‘Furious 7’ Hits The Theaters This Weekend, Universal’s Most Successful Global Franchise Continues Its Run

April 2, 2015  |

When the first Fast and The Furious movie was released in 2001, most thought it would be a one-shot flick about Los Angeles street racing. But it turned out to be a hit and the $38 million movie grossed a whopping $144.5 million. Even more surprising, the Hollywood film raked in  $62.9 million overseas.

Today the movie, now in its seventh installation, has turned into a global franchise. In fact, it is Universal Pictures’ most successful franchise ever, having made the film company $2.3 billion thus far.

In 2013 the franchise made its most money ever. Fast & Furious 6 took in $238.7 million domestically. Internationally it grossed $551.1 million, or an incredible 776 percent more than original film.

The films haven’t always been successful. The 2006 installment, Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, underwhelmed. But then Universal revamped the series and changed Fast & Furious into a heist film set overseas and brought back the entire original cast–Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. Dwayne Johnson joined the franchise next in Fast Five.

Most expect the latest, Furious 7, to lure in fans as it is the final film from Paul Walker, who died in November 2013 in an auto accident. Furious 7 opens around the globe this weekend and will have widest release in Universal’s history.
