Move Over Madonna, ‘Empire’ Soundtrack Is No. 1 On Billboard Chart
Empire has been busy breaking all kinds of records on television, now the hit show has taken over the music charts–literally. The soundtrack for Empire debuted in the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, beating out Madonna’s new “Rebel Heart” album. On top of this, Empire far surpassed industry predictions for the album.
Released on March 10 through Columbia Records, the Empire soundtrack had 130,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music. Now here’s another record for the show: The soundtrack was the first TV soundtrack to enter the charts at No. 1 since 2010, when three different Glee albums debuted in first place.
Meanwhile, chart veteran Madonna’s 21st top 10 album had 121,000 units for the same week.
Interestingly, “Rebel Heart” actually sold more albums than Empire, but it lagged behind the soundtrack in streaming and track equivalent album units, so it ended up at No. 2 on the overall Billboard 200 chart. It didn’t hurt that the Empire soundtrack was highly promoted.
Empire‘s Terrence Howard and Jussie Smollett, who recently landed his own record deal with Columbia, appears on the soundtrack as does Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Estelle, Rita Ora, Juicy J, and Courtney Love (all of which have acted on the show).
