“Another Black Kid Shot By The Police:” Mom Of Slain Teen Speaks Out About Her Son’s Death

Just last week, we learned that former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson has been cleared in the civil rights investigation regarding the death of Michael Brown. Now, we’ve learned that there’s another name to be added to the ever-growing list of unarmed Black men gunned down by police.

Tony Robinson, 19, was fatally wounded by Officer Matt Kenny, 45, following an altercation that occurred at a Madison, Wisconsin apartment Friday night, WSAW reports. Representatives from the Madison Police Department say that Robinson assaulted an officer before he was shot.

Prior to the incident, someone called 911 to report a man who was jumping in and out of traffic before entering an apartment. The caller also told the dispatcher that the same man was responsible for an earlier assault. Responding officers arrived to apartment and say that they made their way in after hearing a disturbance coming from inside. They allege that Robinson then hit an officer in the head before knocking him to the ground. Shortly after, Robinson was shot. As previously stated, Robinson was unarmed. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“That’s what’s going to make this all the more complicated for the investigators, for the public,” said Madison Police Chief Mike Koval.

This was not Kenny’s first time being involved in a fatal shooting while on duty. He shot and killed a suspect back in 2007; however, he was cleared in that investigation after it was determined that the shooting was a “suicide by cop-type” situation. The officer, who has 12 years of experience, has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel has promised a “thorough and transparent” investigation into Robinson’s death. Agents from the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation are looking into the shooting. Per Wisconsin law, outside agencies are required to investigate officer-involved deaths.

“My son is now another statistic of the things that are happening all over the United States,” said Robsinon’s mother Andrea Irwin. “Another Black kid shot by the police.”

Multiple demonstrations have been organized to protest Robinson’s death.
