Based on most of the “Best Dressed” lists floating around, it’s safe to say that everyone loved the $150,000 Calvin Klein gown that Lupita Nyong’o wore to the Oscars on Sunday. But someone loved it so much that they decided to swipe it from the Academy-Award winner, stealing it from the actress’ hotel room earlier this week.
According to TMZ, law enforcement sources claim that Nyong’o’s dress was stolen from her hotel at The London West Hollywood on Tuesday. The actress was gone from the room for most of the day, but in between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., someone found their way into her room to take the gown. Luckily there is some security footage available, so police are analyzing that video to see if they can catch the thief red-handed.
A spokesperson for the L.A. sheriff’s department says, “We are looking at every scenario; when the cleaners go to clean the rooms they do it with the door open so that’s a possibility. Currently we are still investigating, detectives are interviewing and looking for witnesses.”
As trifling as it is, the theft of the gown is not a surprise, considering that it’s worth so much money. The dress was custom made for Nyong’o by Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa, and is adorned in 6,000 white Akoya pearls.
As for the hotel, according to Us Weekly, they are well aware that this is NOT a good look for them:
“This is a terribly unfortunate situation, and we are working with law enforcement on their investigation.”
So just a heads up, if you see someone trying to find a buyer for a Ziploc bag full of Akoya pearls, you should probably call the police…
