Jay Z
In the summer of 2013, basketball fans tuning in to the fifth game of the NBA Finals found out that Jay Z was planning on dropping an album. The Brooklyn rapper starred in a commercial with Samsung to announce the release of “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” The first million copies were free to Samsung users via an app on a mobile device and it was available for retail purchase three days later. Leading up to the album, Jay released the lyrics of a song on a daily basis. Although Billboard announced that the first million copies released via the Samsung deal wouldn’t count towards the overall sales, Hov’s 12th album sold more than half a million copies in its first week.
