11-Year-Old Girl Charged In Infant’s Beating Death
An 11-year-old Ohio girl is facing charges in the beating death of 2-month-old Zuri Whitehead, the New York Daily News reports.
The infant’s mother, Trina Whitehead, 31, met the preteen’s mother, who she believed was her best friend, in 2008 at a medical clinic where they both worked. Trina revealed to The Associated Press that she never noticed anything strange about the child over the years.
“I definitely trusted her,” Trina said of the 11-year-old. “I never thought my baby would be put in some type of harm.”
The grieving mom said that the night before Zuri’s death, the girl and her mother were near her home and they called to ask if the infant could spend the night. Although Trina admits that she was reluctant about allowing Zuri to stay the night with them, they were adamant about giving her a night off from having to look after the baby, so she agreed.
The woman fell asleep on the couch close to 3:30 a.m. Friday, February 6. Within an hour of her falling asleep, the girl is said to have taken Zuri upstairs where she is alleged to have to beaten her before bringing her back downstairs to her mother. The girl’s mother said that she was awakened to the child informing her that something was wrong with the baby. Unfortunately, Zuri died at a nearby hospital six hours later during surgery. Trina admits that the girl’s mother is distraught and called her attempting to apologize.
“She can’t believe what’s going on,” said Trina, who revealed that she previously allowed her daughters, ages 7 and 8, to sleep over her friend’s home without any issues.
On Monday, the girl was charged with murder and strangely, investigators say that she has shown no remorse. Zuri’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
We can’t even begin to understand what either of these women must be going through.
