Just Call Her Mama: Naomi Campbell Explains Her Very Interesting Character Of Camilla On “Empire”
News broke back in September that supermodel Naomi Campbell would get the chance to try her hands at acting again with a role on “Empire,” but when Campbell made her debut on last night’s episode, “The Devil Quotes Scripture,” she left some folks scratching their heads.
Campbell plays Camilla Marks, Hakeem Lyon’s much older love interest. She makes her presence known at a time when he’s also trying to cultivate a relationship with labelmate, Tiana. And while there’s nothing wrong with an older woman and a
much younger man doing their thing, it’s a little weird since she came out of nowhere, instructing him to call her “mama.”
In a chat with EurWeb, Campbell dished on her character and what people can expect from her, because I know she definitely tripped people up last night:
“Camilla really is someone that’s from London and she’s in the fashion industry. She’s a designer. She’s been through ups and downs and basically now she’s in America and she’s decided she’s going to start showing her collection in America.”
That’s all good and dandy, but in a video about her character from FOX, Campbell says that even though Marks’ professional life is on point, her romantic life, specifically with Hakeem, is a hot mess. Their relationship is a hidden one, and Campbell believes that Marks’ story will be relatable for many women:
“Camilla is someone who is very passionate. She likes young men. In terms of Hakeem, she likes him very much. She loves that he’s a hip-hop rapper and she doesn’t care what people think.
I think people are going to love Camilla and see her vulnerability and feel for her and know [that] while you know you can be successful in one aspect of your career, you can also have disappointment in your love life and your personal life as well.
I think there’s going to be an understanding here from a lot of women who have been through that in their lives and I think people are going to want to see Camilla succeed – and Hakeem. I think they’re going to want to see them work it out and be able to come out into the open.”
With Hakeem’s obvious mommy issues (he really doesn’t know or like Cookie), and the fact that their relationship is hidden, I’m very interested in seeing how this storyline will play out. Get to know more about Ms. Camilla Marks below:
