Shop Right & Save Money: Tips To Cut Your Costs

January 13, 2015  |

It can be a challenge to save money, but kick off the new year right with a little extra cash in your purse by changing the way you shop.

Make meal plans. If you know what you are going to eat for the week, you can shop for just those items avoiding extras that will just take up space in your cupboards. “By planning out our meals ahead of time we are not only cutting out impulse purchases at the grocery store but also eliminating the need to order delivery or carry-out on those nights we realize we don’t have anything to make,” writes Lisa Koivu, founder of, for Yahoo.

Check out some apps. Most stores have now launched their own apps, such as the Target Cartwheel App and the Sears/Kmart Shop Your Way App. And you can get special discounts via them.

And then there are apps made just for shoppers to save. On isShopkick, you can earn points by checking in at various stores and buying items. You accumulate points to earn gift cards. PriceGrabber lets you scan products while shopping to see which retailers offer lower prices.  “You can also set up a price alert, which tells you when an item you want has been marked down to your desired price at your preferred store,” reports Consumer Reports. RedLaser does basically the same thing, but covers online stores as well as walk-in locations.

You can also save a lot of money by shopping at the end of the season. “For instance, stores will begin clearing out their selection of winter clothing, outerwear and footwear toward the end of January and the prices will be cheap,” reports Yahoo.

Buy your Christmas items, like decorations, etc., right after Christmas and you will get deep discounts.

Buy reusable products. These items may be a little costly, but they will save you money in the long run. If you use cloth napkins, for example, you won’t have to keep buying paper ones.
