Interestingly, New York’s First Lady Chirlane McCray stumbled across the report and decided to call out Harper’s Bazaar on Twitter. She also offered suggestions for cover models for 2015, which included her college-aged daughter, Chiara de Blasio.

It always helps when someone with Chirlane’s pull publicly speaks out about issues such as this one. Unfortunately, Harper’s is only a small spec in comparison to the fashion industry, which is infamous for icing out models of color.

According to The Fashion Spot’s 2014 diversity report, “out of 611 total covers (this includes issues that had multiple covers), white models appeared 567 times, while people of color* made 119 appearances. That’s almost five times more covers for white models.”

Reps for the publication have not publicly responded to Chirlane’s tweet.
