Former Couple Arrested After Toddler Shoots Himself
A Georgia mother is facing criminal charges after her 4-year-old son accidentally shot himself in the arm, WSBTV reports.
The shooting occurred in the home of Shanice Harris, 26, after her son reportedly found a gun in a bedroom and began playing with it. After the gun went off and Harris realized that her child was injured, she dialed 911. She later told investigators that the she discovered the wounded child lying in the bushes outside of her home; however, that story quickly fell through.
“Apparently, the mother told detectives that she found her child outside laying in the bushes with a gunshot wound in his arm,” said Ronald Momon with the Sandy Springs Police Department.
When officers couldn’t find the gun that the child shot himself with in Harris’ yard, they obtained a search warrant for her home, which is where the hidden gun was discovered. As it turns out, it belongs to Harris’ ex-boyfriend, Marcus Phillips, who is a convicted felon and is not allowed to own a firearm. The child’s grandmother, Mary Silverman, says that she’s thankful that he survived the frightening episode.
“He could have shot himself in the head or could’ve lost enough blood to bleed out,” Silverman told reporters.
Both Phillips and Harris have been charged with obstruction of justice. Phillips was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The child is said to be in stable condition.
