Man Convicted Of Murdering 14-Year-Old Brooklyn Girl
In January, we told you the story of Shaniesha Forbes. The body of the 14-year-old high school freshman was discovered in Brooklyn’s Gerritsen Beach. The teen’s body was stripped of all clothing and her arms, legs and hands were severely burned at the time of discovery.
According to the New York Daily News, Christian Ferdinand, 22, was arrested and charged in Forbes’ murder approximately four months after her body was discovered. Prosecutors say that Ferdinand and Forbes hooked up after meeting on Facebook. Forbes later told her much older lover that she was pregnant with his child and expressed that she did not intend to get an abortion. Ferdinand, who did not want to become a father, smothered Forbes at his cousin’s home and then attempted to burn her remains and dump her body in a Brooklyn creek.
“It didn’t deserve to live,” a witness claims Ferdinand told a friend after the murder.
An autopsy later revealed that Forbes wasn’t actually pregnant.
“He intentionally smothered a 14-year-old girl to death and burned her body to get rid of the evidence,” New York prosecutor Robert Walsh told the jury. “He had a problem that needed solving, he didn’t want to pay child support, and Shaniesha got in the way.”
“His affliction is that he thinks everyone is stupid or too lazy to do their homework,” Walsh continued.
While Ferdinand initially denied being involved, phone records and other evidence told a different story. It only took jurors an hour to find him guilty in the high school student’s murder. He faces up to 25 years in prison.
“He deserves much worse,” said the victim’s sister Shaquana Forbes.
“I hope he won’t see the light of day again,” the teen’s mother, Sandra Price, said following the announcement of the verdict. “I will never see my baby again.”
Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson said that he will “seek the maximum at sentencing to ensure that we get justice for the victim.” Ferdinand is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
