There are more than 34 million people globally who are HIV positive. On World AIDS Day, we all unite to show our support for those living with the disease and those who’ve succumbed to AIDS but we also want to stand with and recognize those who continue to fight the good fight against the deadly disease year-round, like these celebrity AIDS activists.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson
On November 7, 1991 Earvin “Magic” Johnson held a press conference to announce he was retiring from the NBA after testing positive for HIV. He vowed to dedicate his life to battling the deadly disease and he has done just that. That same year he founded the Magic Johnson Foundation and the former NBA legend has done a lot of work to dispel the widely held misconception that HIV only afflicts gay men and needle users.
