9 Celebs Who Worked Together After They Broke Up
You remember what your mama told you, “Don’t sh*t where you eat.” In case, you never knew what that meant, basically don’t date anyone you work with because you’ll have to come back to that spot and it might stink or be incredibly messy. That saying is so true. But a whole hell of a lot of people meet folks at work. Some of these celebrities met their significant others at work while others didn’t. But all of these people ended up working with people they once dated. See who I’m talking about.
Michael Jai White and Tasha Smith
Sometimes art imitates life…in a way. Michael and Tasha play a married couple on the big and small screen and their chemistry is pretty palpable. And there’s a reason for that. Both Michael and Tasha admitted that years before the “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise, the two dated in real life. And while it didn’t work and both married other people, they maintain a friendship and a great working relationship.
Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake
Personally, I loved Cameron and Justin together. She was the boo after Britney and seemed to be a much, much better fit for Timberlake. The two dated for four years, from 2003-2007. And while they might have just run into each other at parties and what not, when Justin decided to get into the acting game, the two worked very closely together for the 2011 film Bad Teacher. If you’ve seen this hilarious movie, you’ll remember that there was a bit of a sex scene that was a riot.
Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal
You know you’re about your business, when you don’t allow a failed relationship to prevent you from making that money. Gwen Stefani began dating fellow band member Tony Kanal around the time the group was formed in 1986. And after seven years, Stefani wanted to marry him and have his kids. But those dreams ended when he broke up with her in 1994, right on the cusp of No Doubt’s mainstream success. But there was some good that came from it. Gwen wrote “Don’t Speak” about their breakup.
Kanal told The Guardian how it was especially hard to speak about the end of their relationship as they were on tour promoting their new album…oh, and listening to Gwen sing it on stage.
But Gwen said that the song not only helped launch her career, it also made her more expressive and assertive.
“Before, I was really passive, all I cared about was being in love with my boyfriend. I didn’t have any creative power, nothing. I don’t know that person any more. But I’d been really bad at school and didn’t know what I would do, I just sang in my brother’s band [Eric Stefani, who founded the group, left No Doubt after Tragic Kingdom to work on The Simpsons.] But after the breakup I just started writing all these songs and suddenly I was: ‘Oh I think I’m really good at this!'”
And while the group almost, and very well could have, broken up over this they respected each other enough to work through it
Chris Brown and Rihanna
I really question whether Chris and Rihanna ever broke up. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised, if after everything is said and done, they end up together. But that’s another story for another day. During the time when they were supposed to be broken up and Chris was dating Karrueche, the two collaborated for the remix to Rihanna’s song “Birthday Cake.” The song was even hotter than the original because this version features Chris Brown harmonizing about how much he wants to lick the icing off and how much he and Rihanna have missed having sex with each other. There was even that “sweeter than a rice cake” line that was most likely a jab at his current girlfriend. These two had no respect for poor Karrueche.
Justin Long and Drew Barrymore
We’ve kind of watched Drew Barrymore grow up. So naturally, plenty of people feel personally invested in her general life, arguably more so than other movie stars. We care about what happens to her, including the ends and outs of her love life. In 2007, Barrymore, after two divorces and a string of other relationships, started dating her former friend Justin Long. They dated for three years, with three breakups during that time. The two had split right before they both started filming their romantic comedy Long Distance, a movie about a couple trying to figure out if their relationship can withstand the distance. In reality, the two rekindled their romance while filming and then broke it off again for good weeks after shooting ended. But they’re still close. Long told New York Magazine, “We were friends before this, and at the heart of what we are and will be is friends. Two good, really dear friends.”
Dolce and Gabbana
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana used to be more than just business associates. At one point they were lovers. For a good while actually. They were together as a couple for 23 years. And in 2005, though they split, they decided to continue to work with one another professionally. The two told the Financial Times that their relationship is exactly the same, except they no longer have sex.
“The worst time for us was when we broke up but kept working together,” says Gabbana. “We thought about splitting up, but no. And the truth is, everything is exactly the same. But no sex!“
“No sex,” agrees Dolce.
[…]”About three or four years ago, I thought, ‘I am exhausted by seeing you all the time!’ ” says Gabbana. “I mean, this is the conversation: he says, ‘I want yellow.’ But I want blue. And then he says, ‘This shirt is giving me a headache,’ and, of course, I have to say, ‘It’s my fault?’ and then he says —”
“No, it’s not your fault,” smiles Dolce.
Fran Drescher and Ex Husband, Peter Marc Jacobson
Have you ever seen that show “Happily Divorced”? Well, it’s completely based off a true story. Drescher was married to her husband Peter Marc Jacobson for 21 years before they divorced. And while Jacobson later came out as gay, it wasn’t the reason they divorced. In fact, Drescher left him for his controlling ways. But he was still trying to fight for their relationship. He begged and pleaded for her to stay. But she was already gone. It wasn’t until she was diagnosed with breast cancer that the two reunited. Jacobson told her he was gay and Drescher was relieved for having left him. And the two were able to rekindle their friendship. They partnered with each other to produce the idea behind the TV Land show “Happily Divorced.”
Lark Voorhies and Mark Paul Gosselaar
Did you guys catch Lifetime’s recent “Saved The Bell” tell-all movie? It didn’t spill a whole lot of tea but I certainly didn’t know that Zach and Lisa (Mark Paul Gosselaar and Lark Voorhies) were a couple in real life. Who knows what really kept them from being together but the movie showed that her Jehovah Witness upbringing didn’t allow her to date conventionally. And then the show’s producers wanted audiences to believe that Zach and Kelly were really an item…hell, they were at some point. Anyway, the show went on for so long, the two had to keep working with each other, long after their relationship ended.
Columbus Short and Britney Spears
These two didn’t exactly date. They just kind of fooled around at one point. Columbus Short got his start as a background dancer for Spears. And on one evening, the two wanted to see each other’s moves off stage, under the covers. And it actually cost Columbus his first marriage. In 2004, he told Star Magazine what happened between the two of them.
”It’s true I slept with Britney, [but] we never had sex because another person was in the room at the time. We shared a bed and were really close, kissing and hugging. The chemistry was magical… our feelings were so strong. Britney’s mom, Lynne, stepped in to prevent that as soon as our feelings started to develop.”
‘‘It would be fair to say Britney caused major problems in our marriage. Sadly, we’re now getting divorced. Despite everything that happened, I’ll always remember those special moments with Britney.”
Even though nothing really happened, the two had to keep working together after their close encounter.
Vivica Fox and 50 Cent
According to Vivica Fox, 50 Cent broke up with her because his friends were in his ear, saying that she was trying to get at his money. And judging by the tears she shed on Mo’Nique’s couch, the break up wasn’t exactly amicable. But the two managed to work some things out. And 50 Cent asked Vivica to star in the video for his song “Do You Think About Me?”
