“They’re Hard To Do”: Kerry Washington On “Scandal” Sex Scenes Being “Awkward” Now That She’s Married
If you watch Scandal from week-to-week, I’m sure you’ve noticed that the show isn’t shy when it comes to sex scenes, and no fictitious pair has had more than Kerry Washington (Olivia Pope) and Tony Goldwyn (President Fitzgerald Grant). While the scenes always show up very steamy on-screen, Washington said in November’s issue of Allure (which she is on the cover of) that executing them is anything but s*xy. In fact, according to the actress, they’re super awkward to do.
“They’re hard to do. You’re doing things that you’re supposed to do with only certain people in your life. Because this is not your real partner in life, doing that is awkward. And then doing it in a room full of people is awkward.”
She also says that doing the scenes is hard because of the fact that she wants to respect her real-life relationship to husband Nnamdi Asomugha, as well as Goldwyn’s relationship with his wife, Jane Musky. People are always talking about their chemistry, but she doesn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea–especially not their partners.
“Particularly with a show like ours, where people are so invested in the chemistry, you just learn to be careful, because people’s real relationships in life are important. I so respect and admire his wife and him and their family, and he feels the same way about mine. And so you learn to be careful about how you say things.”
