Brooklyn Toddler Beaten To Death By Mom’s Boyfriend For Accidentally Soiling Herself: Police
Kelsey Smith, 20, is in police custody after he allegedly delivered fatal blows to his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter.
According to the New York Daily News, Jeida Torres, 3, and her brother Andrew Torres, 5, were left in the care of Smith, while their mother, Kelsey Torres, went to work Saturday. Around 4 p.m. cops received a 911 call from someone reporting bloodcurdling cries coming from an apartment in the Bushwick homeless shelter. When officers arrived on the scene, little Jeida was unresponsive after being “punched and choked” by Smith, said a police source.
“She either pooped her pants or peed on herself, and he got agitated,” a source told reporters.
Smith fled the scene of the crime, leaving a battered and bruised Andrew and an unresponsive Jeida behind. Officers believe that the boy’s injuries may have been sustained before Saturday. Neighbor Mariyln Cruz said that violence and fighting plagued the family for the two weeks leading up to Jeida’s death.
Smith, who tried to take his life by slashing himself, was later found by police in Queens. Kelsey and her father looked on in horror when they arrived to the crime scene.
“I saw the paramedics run out with little girl wrapped in a blanket,” said neighbor Keith Best. “Her hands were just hanging out … just limp.”
“He was crying,” Best went on to say of the children’s grandfather who broke down after learning of Jeida’s fate. “He just lost his mind.”
Jeida, who suffered blows to her head and body, died at a nearby hospital. Andrew is said to be in stable condition. In addition to the NYPD, the Administration for Children’s Services and the Department of Homeless Services are looking into the incident.
