There are tons of variables in business ownership that are out of your hands — a change in foot traffic, the price of raw materials or public tastes, for example . So it’s important to have a good grasp on what you can control. Top among those things is the quality of customer service.

Oftentimes, this is where business owners will cut corners. After all, if they offer a product that people are willing to pay for and say “please” and “thank you,” there’s not much more to it right? Wrong.

We had an experience this weekend that reminded us that sometimes business owners need to remember the basics. And particularly for Black businesses, customer service comes up time and again as the reason why customers choose to take their money elsewhere. Certainly, this is a universal problem, but it’s worth keeping in mind.
