June Ambrose Talks Becoming A Fashion Designer And New HSN Collection
We’re no stranger to celebrity stylist June Ambrose whose high-profile clients include Jay Z, Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige. She’s been building her name in the fashion industry for years now and her resume includes being a published author, guest judge on “Project Runway,” star of her own former VH1 reality show and Instagram style star with nearly half a million followers.
She can now add fashion designer to her extended resume as she just launched June by June Ambrose, her clothing, handbag and shoe collection with HSN, for fall. Over cups of tea (or “tea and toasting” as June eloquently put it), we caught up with the stylist at the launch event for her collection in New York City earlier this week, and got the tea (literally! ) on the collection, the spring 2015 trends she’s excited about and fashion advice everyone should follow.
StyleBlazer: You first launched a shoe collection with HSN. How did the collaboration initially come about?
June Ambrose: When I was introduced to the company, they wanted me to do hosting. I told them I was designer and that’s something I’ve been doing for the past twenty something years. They mentioned they didn’t normally have success with stylists but after speaking with them and getting my message points across, they felt there could be something there that the customer could connect with and we started with a capsule collection. They asked which category I was most interested in and I said footwear. The collection ended up doing really well and my social media helped drive a different type of customer to the network in general. We did spring which sold out and fall which was also successful. I then decided I wanted to grow the brand and we started talking about other categories which led to this collection. It didn’t have anything to do with me being a celebrity stylist, it was more about me being a working mom and connecting with those women. And it brought us here.
SB: So how do you do it all?
JA: For me, I’m constantly seeing things that I think the audience would be interested in seeing a glimpse inside of. I always try to create this takeaway, sometime there isn’t one. If I want to take about my accolade from the Essence Street Style Awards, I’ll show my trophy with my beauty essentials. I’ve formatted it all so it makes it easy for me to plug in content and as I go, I just capture it.
