Yesterday, a surveillance video of ex-Ravens football player Ray Rice knocking out his now-wife, Janay Rice, inside of an elevator leaked. After the footage was released, the Baltimore Ravens cut Rice and the NFL indefinitely suspended him. Meanwhile on Twitter, the hashtags #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft began trending as women on the social media platform discussed their experience with domestic violence in an effort to fight against the victim-blaming placed on Janay Rice for staying with her husband.
Unfortunately, the social media manager of DiGiorno Pizza’s Twitter account decided to use the #WhyIStayed hashtag without knowing its purpose. The company tweeted: “#WhyIStayed You had pizza” and once users saw the Tweet they began to bash the brand for their insensitivity and lack of awareness. Since then, the tweet has been deleted and DiGiorno’s issued an apology, stating: “A million apologies. Did not read what the hashtag was about before posting.” After apologizing, DiGiorno began to personally respond to Twitter users who were offended by their tweet.
Thankfully, DiGiorno continues to individually apologize to Twitter account users who tweet them about their social media mistake.
