They may have wound up becoming some of the best shows on television in their own right but these sitcoms started off as spin-offs of other hit shows.

“The Simpsons”

Almost 30 years ago, Matt Groening was asked to create some animated shorts for “The Tracey Ullman Show.” He created a dysfunctional family and named the characters after his own relatives and “The Simpsons” made their debut in April of 1987 and after a three-season run, Homer, Marge and their three children were given their own show. Twenty-five seasons later, the show is still going strong and has surpassed “Gunsmoke” as the longest-running scripted show on primetime television. Recently, FX network aired all 552 episodes in an epic marathon that lasted for 15 days.
