Alfre Woodard, Laverne Cox, Danai Gurira & Nicole Beharie Grace Essence’s October’s Channel Changers Cover

In case you haven’t noticed, Black women are making quite a few strides in the entertainment industry. Particularly in television and film. To celebrate this moment, Essence sat down with big and small screen stars Alfre Woodard, from the upcoming show “State of Affairs,” Nicole Beharie, from “Sleepy Hollow” and Jackie Robinson’s wife in 42, Danai Gurira from “The Walking Dead” and Laverne Cox from “Orange Is The New Black.”

Check out a couple of quotes from the interview.

Gurira, who plays zombie slayer Michonne on “The Walking Dead” said, “It is a golden age because we’re allowed to see that more people are given a voice, and that is a beautiful thing. We know there’s been a dearth of this type of diversity. I remember watching “Orange” and feeling as if something new was happening.”

Cox, who received an Emmy nomination, seconded the statement:

“People are watching television in a different way. I’ve been acting for a very long time and not getting very far, and I would say we needed some sort of systemic revolutionary change for me to have an acting career.”

And Woodard, the veteran in the game spoke profoundly about the resilience of Black women.

Is it the golden age, daughters? I want you all to believe: We’re not here because somebody suddenly said, ‘Let’s have some women of color [on TV].’ We’re here because we’re brilliant at what we do. We’re persistent. You could put us at the bottom of the ocean and we’d still come to the top.”

The cover looks great and it’s wonderful to see Essence diversifying their leading ladies. Here for all of it.
