African Americans like to share. A study by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF), “Cultures of Giving: Energizing and Expanding Philanthropy by and for Communities of Colors,” found that Black people are far more likely to give back to the community compared with Whites. African Americans donate 25 percent more of their income annually than whites and a whopping 63 percent of Latino households give away hard-earned money, reports The Grio.
Despite struggles, African-Americans philanthropic goes back to the first fund set up in the 1920s. “Across communities, growth rates have varied but African-American funds have had the most consistent growth over time, increasing modestly each decade since the 1970s,” says the report.
So it only stands to reason that Black celebrities would be big givers as well. There is even a blog that chronicles Black philanthropy, especially by Black stars, BlackGivesBack. Every year they publish a black celebrity philanthropist list.
“African Americans tend to give most to causes that have the most impact on their lives, with education, youth projects, health-related causes, and civic engagement at the top of the list,” says Tracey Webb, founder of BlackGivesBack.
There’s also BlackCelebrityGiving.Com, which offers news, videos and photos of celebrity philanthropy, nonprofit organizations and causes that affect the Black community.
