Although the saying goes, “The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice,” society does tend to show favoritism to fairer-skinned people so it’s understandable for celebrities to feel pressure to conform. But did some of these entertainers take it past highlighting powder and good lighting? Here’s a list of celebs accused of skin bleaching.
Meagan Good has always been known for her sexy looks, but lately rumors have been floating around that her look has gotten a lot lighter. The talk got so bad, Meagan penned an open letter to address the “nonsense” which boiled down to her absolutely loving her brown complexion.
Lil Kim was once the reigning queen of rap but all good things eventually come to an end. While she’s tried to win her crown back, the Brooklyn emcee has changed a lot since she first emerged on the rap scene, including her appearance. It’s no secret that Lil Kim has gone under the knife numerous times and has gotten a new nose, chin, and breasts. But critics have also accused the “Lighters Up” rapper of bleaching her skin. Kim has lashed back and accused people of purposely photoshopping her appearance but she hasn’t confirmed nor denied bleaching her skin.
Beyonce is used to making headlines because her every move has been chronicled by the media but a few years ago, the “Flawless” singer’s make-up campaign caused quite a stir. Her national campaign with L’Oreal came under fire after photos released showed a much lighter singer. This brought up memories from back in 2008 when L’Oreal lightened Beyonce’s skin in a print campaign. Ever since then, the former Destiny’s Child lead singer has been accused of lightening her skin to push her career along even further.
When Nicki Minaj first pursued her dreams of becoming a chart-topping rapper, she looked slightly different than how she looks today. Now she can be seen rocking a multitude of colored wigs and is a lot curvier than when she started out. But the “Pills N Potions” singer has been accused of bleaching her skin because she looks quite a bit lighter now than when she was just another underground rapper in Queens trying to make it big.
At the end of “Making The Band 3,” Sean “Diddy” Combs handpicked Dawn Richard to become one of the members of Danity Kane. Although the group spilt up and got back together only to split up again, Richard has managed to keep herself busy, and earlier this year she was once again accused of altering her appearance. The songstress posted a photo of herself on Instagram in January and immediately comments began to flood bombarding Richard complaining about her appearance. A year ago, some suggested that Richard went under the knife for rhinoplasty, chin reduction and an eye lift.
When India Arie emerged on the music scene, her earthy, Mother Nature, neo-soul vibe set her apart from other singers. Some of her fans were shocked to see a lighter Arie on a promo picture that was released to support her latest single and voiced their opinions accusing the “I Am Not My Hair” singer of purposely lightening her skin. Wasting no time, Arie took to her twitter page to clear the rumors up: “Personally speaking! i’m happy to say I have NOT BLEACHED my skin LOL! ROTF at the thought.”
Keke Palmer started her acting career early on in life first by starring on television then making her film debut in the 2006 move “Akeelah and the Bee.” Like many others, Palmer has struggled with society’s standard of beauty. She admitted to praying for lighter skin as a young child but as she got older, she learned to appreciate the color of her skin. When asked if she’s bleached her skin, Palmer had this to say: “We need to stop separating ourselves by how dark or how light we are. I have been the same complexion all my life and if you think otherwise don’t follow me.”
Tamar Braxton stole the show from her older siblings with their reality television show “Braxton Family Values” but when her appearance began to lighten up, the rumor mill started buzzing. The youngest Braxton sibling was accused of bleaching her skin but it turns out, the R&B singer suffers from Vitiligo. “Anybody with skin issues knows that that’s a very sensitive subject,” she told “Ebony” magazine. “And that’s why I’ve never shared that I have Vitiligo, because I do. I’ve always had it, since I was a young girl. It’s not as bad as others because everybody has it differently, but I’ve certainly had mine diagnosed. That’s why I tan. People say, “You bleach your skin!” But I tan just so I can have a better tone on my skin, boo!”
Lark Voorhies would go down in pop culture history for her portrayal of Lisa Turtle on the cult classic teen sitcom “Saved By The Bell.” After the show went off of the air, Voorhies made guest appearances here and there but a few years ago when she popped up looking almost unrecognizable, immediately rumors started to circulate that she was bleaching her skin. What’s more, her behavior was bizarre and her mother blamed everything on a mental illness. However, Voorhies went on “Entertainment Tonight” to dispute the rumors but she ended up making things worse.
Tempestt Bledsoe grew up as one of the Cosby kids on the hit sitcom and after the show went off of the air, she’s stayed out of the limelight for the most part. Last year, the veteran actress signed on to star in “Guys with Kids” opposite Anthony Anderson and she appeared on the red carpet of an event looking a lot lighter than a lot of people remembered her.
In 1998, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire helped bring the excitement back to baseball with their home run race. After almost 20 years in the MLB, Sosa retired in 2007. Two years after staying away from the public, the home run slugger appeared at the Latin Grammys looking like a white version of his former self. “It’s a bleaching cream that I apply before going to bed and whitens my skin some,” the former Chicago Cubs star explained. “It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily.”
Singer Keri Hilson has taken a break from making music for quite some time. When she’s not spending time with her baller boyfriend Oklahoma City Thunder Serge Ibaka, Hilson still manages to make headlines of her own. That’s because the “Knock You Down” singer has been accused of bleaching her skin. While her appearance looks lighter in some photos, Hilson has not come forward to confirm or deny the rumors.
There is no denying Diana Ross’ diva status. Getting her start way back in the 50’s, Ross has ruled the charts as part of a group with The Supremes and then as a solo artist. Being in the public eye for that long, the public has seen Ross become a mother and a grandmother. But many have wondered if the veteran singer has purposely changed her appearance lately. The wigs have gotten bigger and curlier but she’s also been accused of lightening up her complexion.
The world watched Michael Jackson go from an adorable, chocolate skin kid with a button nose and a huge Afro to a pale man with long, stringy hair. While few could dispute the talent Jackson had, many dragged him in the mud for constantly altering his appearance. Jackson first blamed his skin bleaching on the skin disease Vitiligo, which many people did not believe because that wouldn’t explain the nose jobs or cleft in the chin. After the pop icon passed away in 2009, an autopsy report did confirm that Jackson suffered from the skin condition.
Michael wasn’t the only Jackson accused of bleaching his skin. After numerous visits to the plastic surgeon, older sister Latoya Jackson barely resembles the person she once was. In addition to the cosmetic procedures she had, including rhinoplasty, chin reduction and an eyelift, Latoya has also been accused of purposely lightening her skin. Jackson has been mum on the plastic surgery and skin bleaching rumors
