“I Thought It Would Never Happen”: Nicki Minaj On Working With Beyoncé For “Flawless Remix”; Drops Teaser For “Anaconda” Video

August 4, 2014  |

Anytime Beyoncé drops a new track, it always shakes up the Internet, and that’s exactly what happened over the weekend when she teamed up with Nicki Minaj to release the remix to “Flawless.” It’s a pretty hot record (should be a club banger), and it’s the third song in a week that Minaj has been a part of that has been a hit. “Bang Bang” with Ariana Grande and Jessie J is currently #1 on iTunes, and “Anaconda” is currently #4 on those same charts (and #1 on the Rap charts). After having a pretty successful few days, Minaj chatted with Hot 97 about what it was like working with Queen Bey, and if she thinks she’ll work with Remy Ma anytime soon. Here are the details of that chat:

How The “Flawless Remix” Came About:

“I think like a month or two ago, G called me when I was on my way to Vegas and he said, Beyonce wants you to remix “Flawless.” And after I got proper medical help and started breathing again, I was like, ‘What!?'[laughs] She sent me a version that she wanted. She told me, ‘Hey, I want you to be you, I don’t want you to hold back.’ I said, ‘you sure?’ She said ‘Yeah, I just want you to be you and do you.’ And I was actually in New York writing the verse and I recorded the verse in New York and she stopped by the studio and she was such a sweetheart! She was hyping me up like ‘Yeah, do your thing! Don’t hold back! Go in!’ And I was like, ‘okay, all right.’ So we had just been waiting for her to drop it. She told me she would drop it sometime while she was in the middle of the tour, because I wrote the verse before she even went on tour. And that’s basically how that happened and we’ve just been going back and forth. I’ve been sending her pictures of myself and we’ve just been going back and forth about the mixes and the single art, and now, here you have it.”

If She Wanted To Work With Beyoncé In The Past:

“You know, when I was putting out mixtapes and stuff, I was always remixing her stuff. I have a dope remix that my fans have always been in love with to one of her songs, “Sweet Dreams, that me and Wayne did. But I figured that eventually we would do something together. I’m not going to lie, recently I thought it would never happen, cause I felt like if she was going to ask me she would have been asked me. But I mean, I think the stars aligned the right way. I think we’re just in the right places in our career that it makes sense now. I think with the release of her last album, her records are kind of geared to what I do now.”

If She Will Collaborate With Remy Ma Next:

“Yeah, I told you guys before Remy even came home that I would love to. I was a fan of hers before she went to jail and nothing has changed. I always felt like she was at the top of her game and in relation to all the MCs in the game, I always felt that she was sitting there at the top.  We’ll see. I’m not closing that off. I feel like we’ll get the right thing and do it for the people.”

Speaking of things “for the people,” Minaj dropped the 16-second teaser video for her new song “Anaconda” on Instagram today, and just like the single art, fans can expect a whole lot of booty bouncing everywhere. Check all that out, and the song, which features a sample of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” below.
