Death Over a $20 Debt
What is $20 worth to you? In 22 year old Kamisha Richards’ case it cost her her life. Richards loaned the money to 18 year old Kayla Henriques, the sister of the man she’d been dating off and on for the past seven years. Richards loaned Henriques the money to buy her young son diapers and baby formula. When Richards suspected that the money was spent on something else she asked for the money back. They hashed out their dispute over Facebook.
Kamisha Richards: the last time u will con me into giving u money.”
Kayla Henriques: “Dnt try to expose me mama but I’m not tha type to thug it ova facebook see u wen u get frm wrk.”
A few hours later police found Richards’ body on Henriques’ kitchen floor in Brooklyn, New York. After a heated argument, Henriques stabbed her in the chest with a kitchen knife, killing her. At the time of the stabbing there were several people in the apartment, so there were witnesses.
Henriques was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Richards who had graduated from college, was working two jobs as she prepared to go to law school. She took the LSAT in December.
Ms. Richards’s mother, Nicole Colter-Henry told The New York Times “I’m never going to see my daughter. All over $20.”
