Kanye West Calls Out Nike At Wireless Fest and Shows Love To Drake
It’s never a good sign when the most excited your fans get during your performance is when you start playing someone else’s songs. Namely, someone who didn’t even show up.
In Drake’s defense, the rapper tweeted that he was under the weather and apologized he would not be making an appearance at London’s Wireless Fest this past weekend. But not even Drake could save Kanye West from himself.
Kanye West hit the stage sporting a face mitten in the middle of summer choosing to skip past getting right to the hits we know and love and instead rant about fashion giants Nike, Louis Vuitton and Gucci for 15 minutes. During the rant, West encourages the crowd to “be awesome” and “f**ck his face” (seriously) and accuses the fashion labels of attempting to “dishumanize” him.
As ridiculous as this all sounds, I get the point Kanye’s been trying to make ever since he released his latest album, “Yeezus”. He honestly has some great insight, I just fear he isn’t explaining himself very well. In all honesty, it’s hard to take him seriously in the forums and fashion in which he attempts to keep trying to have this conversation. If you want to talk racism and consumerism, that’s fine, but I’m not sure if a summer festival in front of Londontown fans who just want to party and sing along to “Ni**as in Paris” is the place to do it. Shout out to Yeezus for trying to re-create his very own Woodstock though.
West mentions, “They’ve taken the idea of celebrity and tried to make me seem like I was stupid or something. I’m not going to mention names. I’m not going to say Nike or anything.” I’m sure this surprises none of us as corporate America has been pimping celebs for years, but West is all over the place. He never really gets to the movement he wants to make or how he wants fans to support? Shall we boycott Nike, the same company under which he sold Air Yeezy 2’s recently for $2,750.00 a pop? West seems to have severe issues with the brand stifling his creativity, but apparently sees no problems with stifling some folks from being able to afford fashionable footwear.
Kanye did take some time out his set to dedicate to sick Drake playing a few seconds of singles “Trophies” and “We Made it”. Drake showed his appreciation via Instagram stating:
“Man I appreciate Kanye playing Trophies at Wireless so much. I want to be at all the shows more than anything in the world right now. I just keep watching the video over and over. Slow motion for me right now but I promise all the fans an incredible experience as soon as I am back. I am so sorry once again I love you all dearly. Thank you Ye for giving me that joy tonight.”
In the meantime I think Kanye needs a good publicist, a therapist, and an agent so he can really take his consumer activism to CNN or get a book published. Because face mittens at concerts backed by auto tune just isn’t going to cut it.
I could barely sit through this rant, but if you’ve got a few free minutes check out some vids of West’s Wireless set below:
