Nicki Minaj Cleans Up Seemingly Shady BET Speech: ‘The Media Puts Words In My Mouth All Of The Time’

If you caught the BET Awards on Sunday night, chances are you saw Nicki Minaj’s very interesting Best Female Hip-Hop Artist acceptance speech. In case you missed it, it went a little something like this:

“You guys, this is always very, very emotional for me because this is my fifth year winning this award and I don’t take it for granted, I really don’t,” she said. “I thank God that I’ve been placed in a position to do something and represent women in a culture that is so male-driven.”

“My point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it,” she continued.

“Noooo, noooo shade. No shade,” she added in a way that people tend to do after they’ve said something extremely shady.

Some believed that her comments were meant to take jabs at fellow hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea, who delivered a great performance that night. But now, Nicki is taking to Twitter denying going after Iggy (or anyone else) during her speech.

“The media puts words in my mouth all of the time and this is no different,” she tweeted. “I will always take a stance on women writing because I believe in us! I believe we’re smart enough to write our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do! I’ve been saying this for 5 years. I fell in love with Lauryn Hill b/c I knew she was the author behind those amazingly profound and articulated songs on MisEducation. It’s the reason I have a different level of respect for Missy. I know she’s a writer and producer. Women MUST aspire for more.”

As for the perceived Iggy shade, Nicki says:

“I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of ‘Fancy,’ publicly. She should be very proud of that. All women nominated should be proud. That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up & coming females to do that.”

We won’t get to speculating about whether or not Nicki intended to slight anyone in her speech. But we will say that her words came off with a teeny hint of shade.
