Zendaya’s Dad Explains Her Decision To Drop Out Of Aaliyah Biopic: ‘She’s A True Professional’

July 1, 2014  |

Yesterday, we reported on Zendaya Coleman’s decision to forfeit her starring role in the controversial Aaliyah biopic. We were slightly surprised by the announcement, considering how hard she defended her ability to nail the role. Some speculated that haters and Internet trolls bullied the actress and singer into stepping down. The former Disney star’s dad, Kazembe Ajamu, however, says that this definitely wasn’t the case.

“Let me be perfectly clear!” he tweeted. “Zendaya did not drop out of the movie because of haters and people who said she wasn’t black enough.”

“In fact, they only fueled her fire to kill this role,” he boasted. “However, the production value was very important to her and it had to be done right. Issues around production are what caused Zendaya to pull out of this project.”

Kazembe went on to say that he’s still fully confident in his daughter’s ability to play the deceased singer, despite her decision.

“Zendaya would have been an amazing Aaliyah because she’s a true professional who would have embodied and studied the character and brought Aaliyah to life on the screen!!!”

Clearly, Kazembe is playing no games when it comes to his baby girl.

What are your thoughts on his explanation?
