Angie Martinez Offers Insight Into Recent ‘Power’ Move: ‘I Really Tried To Look At What’s Best For My Career’
Last week, the entertainment world was shocked by the announcement of Angie Martinez’s departure from HOT 97. Of course, radio personalities leave stations all of the time, but after working for HOT since she was just 16 years old, Angie’s name has become nearly synonymous with the New York station. Minds were blown even further when it was revealed that the “Voice of New York” would be taking a job at Power 105.1— HOT 97’s longtime rival and competitor. Now, the iconic media personality is offering insight into what prompted her to make such a major decision.
“I tried to really look at what’s best for my career, what’s best for my life, what’s best for my family, for me,” she told Billboard. “I had to take my emotion out of it. It was a decision that I felt was right for me.”
As many have speculated, the radio vet says that Clear Channel offered her an amazing opportunity.
“The thing is about the move – it’s not just going down the dial,” the 43-year-old mother went on to explain. “It’s about joining a team and a company that really offers me all kinds of growth potential.”
Angie, who has managed to remain neutral throughout HOT 97’s public feuds with Power 105.1, adds that the transition has been “amazingly” amicable. In fact, she says that she’s quite surprised by all of the controversy and attention that was attracted by the move.
“People keep texting me like this is such a big deal and keep forwarding me links to things,” she revealed. “I’ve really tried to keep a quiet mind about it. I’m trying not to read too much of the comments on social media or too much stuff about it in general. It’s emotional enough for me, and I just want to look forward and not get too wrapped up in the noise.”
As previously reported, Ang is set to begin her new gig at Power 105.1 in July. Her show will also be syndicated on Miami’s The Beat.
