Relationship Debate: ‘What Gift Should I Get My New Boyfriend?’

February 25, 2011  |

Dear China,

I want to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday, but don’t know what to get him besides the usual, boring watch or cologne. I want to be creative but have no idea what to do! Help! We just started dating. I would like ideas on fun dates that we can go on without breaking the bank!
Banking on a Good Idea

Dear Banking on a Good Idea,

Now these kinds of questions I just absolutely love! I love that you want to be wise about your finances, and still show love where love is due. As we say in the millionaire girls club, “love is due, but the balance ain’t.” Amen? Show your love, but don’t go broke while you’re doing it.

O.K. Now, you can be super-cute about your gift by really reflecting on your experiences with this man and then making a gift that celebrates that experience. For example, if you and your new guy love the same radio show, and have been listening to the same radio show every morning for a little while, you can make him a special audio skit based on the show he loves. Use fake and funny “callers” and let loose on the little audio gift. Record it on a nicely imprinted compact disc, place it in a case and wrap it nicely. Include the C.D., a card, some of his favorite knick-knacks in a handsome box or bag, and you’re good to go.

You know, these sorts of gifts that are thoughtful and unique, restore meaning to our overly manufactured society. They also save you a ton of money and give you a clue whether the guy you’re dating is “the one” or not. His reaction to whatever you think to give him as a gift, as well as his appreciation of your skills in making it, will determine whether he gets that more expensive gift down the line: i.e. you!

À bientôt, cherie!
