Haughton Family Vows To Stop At Nothing To Block The Release Of Lifetime’s Aaliyah Biopic

June 18, 2014  |

Unsurprisingly, fans aren’t the only ones not feeling the idea of Lifetime’s forthcoming Aaliyah biopic starring former Disney star Zendaya Coleman. According to reports, the family of the late singer are not happy about this recent announcement either. The beloved singer’s uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson, recently spoke with TMZ on behalf of the family and he says that they’re extremely upset over it all.

For starters, Barry says that no one from the network even bothered to contact the family about the film. The other issue, according to Barry, is that while the family is not opposed to there being a film highlighting Aaliyah’s life, they feel that a made-for-television film is much too small for someone as big as Aaliyah. As a result, Barry says the family will do everything within their power to halt the release of this film. He adds that they have already hired a lawyer regarding this matter.

Representatives on behalf of Lifetime have yet to respond to the family’s reaction, but as we told you yesterday, they have commented on the public’s reaction to Zendaya being cast as Aaliyah.

“Zendaya embodies everything you want in a Actress to play Aaliyah,” casting director Twinkie Byrd told The YBF. “She is a Poised, Professional, STRONG Actress (studied at California Shakespeare Theater and American Conservatory Theater). A Triple Threat Actor, Singer Dancer. She LOVES AALIYAH and will do a Wonderful Job! She is of mixed ethnicity. Her name is Bantu (Zimbabwe) meaning ‘To Give Thanks.'”

What’s interesting, however, is how the family is now saying that they’re against the Aaliyah biopic being a TV film. As you may recall, not too long ago, it was reported that Barry was on-board with VH1 biopic about the singer’s life, which was rumored to be released this summer. Clearly, the drama surrounding this film is only beginning. It will be interesting to see what happens with all of this. And of course, we will be sure to keep you posted as new details emerge.
