Katy Perry Accused Of Racism After Featuring Big-Butt Mummies In Performance

Katy Perry is under fire again after images from one of her stage sets from the Prismatic World Tour leaked to the Internet. During the set, the controversial singer dances on stage with a group of women dressed as buxom mummies with large backsides, big breast, full lips and black bobs. Many have taken offense to the set, stating that it promotes stereotypes and objectifies the black female body. And of course, folks wasted no time in taking to Twitter to blast the 29-year-old singer over the stereotypical images used in the performance.

Others argue that the mummies weren’t offensive and that they simply went along with the performance’s ancient Egyptian theme.

This of course, isn’t the first time one of Katy’s performances has left folks with a sour taste in their mouths. At the American Music Awards, the singer was pegged as racially insensitive after she appeared on stage dressed as a Japanese Geisha. Katy however, defended the performance.

“All I was trying to do is just give a very beautiful performance about a place that I have so much love for and find so much beauty in, and that was exactly where I was coming from, with no other thought besides it,” she told GQ back in February.

Racist? Most likely NOT…An example of a member of an socioeconomically dominant/historically oppressive group using a stereotype-with undoubtedly negative and offensive connotations-commonly associated with a group that happens to have a history of being systematically oppressed, discriminated against, underrepresented and overly séxuálized in order to gain a profit? ABSOLUTELY…Dress a pig in 2 pairs of Louboutins and it is STILL a pig walkin around in its own shít

Truthfully, years ago, it was thougt that black females were the only ones with over sized derrieres as Ms Sally Baartman was put on display as a freak of nature for her over-sized butt. When she died they put her body on display again as a freak of nature. Only outcry form the world over made them stop and give her the decent burial she deserved. We all know is was Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s song meant to glorify the black woman and not ridicule them,” I like big butt”s, that made white women and others jump in to join the big butt club.

  • Alfreda Calbert

Kim K, Coco and other white women flaunt their big butts and curves non-stop. How did big butts get to be a black woman only feature?

    • YeaIsaidIT

It’s not, it just so happens to be a key feature associated with a specific group of women who have been physically, socially, economically and psychologically ráped for hundreds of years…something Kim K and Coco have no historical or ancestral connection to…similar to the reason why a white man from Ithaca with dreadlocks is viewed (even if briefly) differently than a black man from Addis Ababa

I am black and female and I am not offended…. AT ALL. Honestly, I am sick of people trying to tell me I should be offended at every single thing. Why is racism thrown around at anything remotely funky. Oh My God. PLEASE STOP. I happen to like Miley and I don’t have a problem with Katy’s performance. People are oversensitive as hell.

  • MzBrenda Tyson

Why are things taken out of context. That girl isn’t racist. If she was racist do you really think she would surround herself with ppl she doesn’t like. Get a clue for real. This is so crazy

It’s really sad to me that folks do not have the language nor critical analytical skill set to see racism here. One, there is a structural power dynamic. This is not an even playing field. Katy Perry is a white woman with access to power, privilege, and platforms that black women do not have yes, black women may flaunt their bodies but often it occurs in the media as the result of its compatibility with preexisting notions of black atavism. Put another way, black hyper sexuality sells. There is, however, a huge difference between black folks cashing in on systemic subjugation and privileged white folks exploiting that for dollars. This is not, nor has it ever been an even playing field. The “we do it so she can do it” argument does not hold water. And it will not until we have the same rights, privilege, wealth, and access that white folks do. Until then, the power dynamic is uneven and Perry, the one weilding more power, is exploiting a subjugated group, which equals racism. two, the mummys are clearly meant to be stereotypical, we know that black women are known for having larger assets and Perry is exploiting that for gain in order to blacken herself and her performance in line with her partnership with Juicy J and recent commentary on Drake. We need to stop giving these folks passes. You wonder why there are no black hit makers? It’s by design, white folks in black face are enough for record companies. We no longer need soul singers, we have Adele and Justin. Wake up. This is crazy.

  • kickash

racist or not they look really stupid. fire whoever had that dumb idea

  • kiki j

“Promoting stereotypes and objectify black women” laughable, we do enough of that on our own. Sorry don’t see racism.

  • Dannie

Since this is during the performance of Dark Horse which has an ancient Egyptian theme, are they acknowledging that the ancient Egyptians were black then…? Lol

  • J Baby

I find nothing racist about this at all. She is an entertainer that is expressive, from her cone bra to mummy theme, she likes to catch the eye of audience and be fun and entertaining. What race doesn’t have excessively big breasts and butt these days?! And for those commenting about the race card being thrown out by black ppl, from wut I can read on the tweets, many where white so let that go as a black issue. Seems like many ppl making it more than wut it is to stir up trouble and controvery. Knowing katie perry, she was making a statement and maybe those naysayers missed it.

  • Pash-in

People need to stop being so sensitive, lots of cultures have big butts and large chest, natural or store bought. If anything it’s more of a sexism thing, rather than a racism thing, and even that is stretching it.

  • Hangover21

Racist? Another example of political correctness gone awry.

  • BabyBlue

This is some b.s. The word racist or racism sounds cliche. I’m also getting tired of the word feminists and black feminist. Smh. Kill the noise

  • YeaIsaidIT

Oh, I see…if you bandage a stereotype up good enough, people forget that it is STILL a stereotype and you can’t be considered racist! Good to remember in case the local theater wants to do a comedy about 9/11, they can just have them dress up a bunch of care bears in hijabs and turbans and call them terrorists….

  • Courtney Rene’ Lowe

Racist? Seriously? If anyone should be upset it should be Mummies. Has the National Mummy Delegation spoke on this yet? *rolls eyes*

    • NOPe

      lol!

    • sugarfoot

      Lolololol..hahahaha

  • lockstress

*checks bags, open drawers and places ad in paper inquriring where in the hell is this racist*?

  • YaYa

OMG Can we please STOP throwing around the word “Racism”!?!?! Not everyone or everything is racist! It may be “ridiculous”, sure it could be “Offensive”, or maybe even “Ignorant”…. but I’m pretty sure Katy Perry isn’t a racist lol.

  • NOPe

Um, Black women aren’t the only women with naturally big butts.

  • az

if this a white male enterrainer there would be no question if this was racist or in poor taste.

    • sugarfoot

      Why?Can you explain?

  • WHY

I am sorry. No one objectifies a black female’s body more than a black female. As a black woman, I don’t find this racist. Think about it, women in general are getting plastic surgery for bigger, abnormal breast and butts (some of them are in fact BLACK). The same thing happens when these same individuals wear ridiculous hair and makeup. People are quick to say something or someone is racist. Before you do that, take a good look at yourself first. What you actually see might surprise you.

    • Growth

When I saw them I thought of nikki minaj… They look just like her. I’m not even mad at Katy.

      • WHY

You must have read my mind. The same people who feel Katy was wrong should feel the same way towards Ms. Minaj. I guess since Nikki is black, she gets a pass, huh? Society doesn’t make sense sometimes.

  • glowChester

Someone needs to remind the African American community of the boy who cried Wolf.

    • sugarfoot

It not only the African American community that claims this is racist. Read the tweets

      • NOPe

So it’s “racist” yet has no specific target? Yeah, that makes sense……

        • Get It
