“The Media Has To Be Careful:” Janet Mock Responds To R.Kelly’s Transgender Teen Coming Out
Earlier today, we reported on R.Kelly and Drea Kelly’s teen child who now identifies as a transgender male.
“Born biologically female, Jaya now identifies as Jay, a transgender male. Jay recently came out on Instagram publicly but says he has identified as male since he was six or seven years old. As of about three months ago, Jay said his father is unaware of his transition and new identity but shared that his mother, ‘Hollywood Exes’ star, Drea Kelly has been extremely supportive.”
MadameNoire received the opportunity to ask author and journalist Janet Mock her thoughts on the media reporting on celebrity transgender teens and Mock eloquently stated:
“What I find very unfortunate, this young person has been sought and outed by the media. I find that to be very irresponsible because I believe we should be careful because we then strip this young person of their own personhood and sense of privacy just because their parents choose to be famous people. But this young person is finding themselves and for us to be reporting on their lives in this way is over stepping the boundaries of anyone’s sense of privacy. We have to be careful about how we talk about people, especially young peoples’ lives. Just because their parents may be famous does not mean they want to be famous. I believe the Kelly’s child is a private citizen unlike other celebrity teens who choose to entertain the celebrity lifestyle. The media has to be careful about how we talk about them. Yes, people may gaze upon his profile but we/I am not comfortable talking about a transgender teen so publicly.”
What do you think about Janet Mock’s thoughts on the outing of transgender teens?
