Axed! 9 Real-Life Lessons Learned From Being Fired
TIME TO MOVE ON
“The most valuable lesson I learned from being fired is that when an organization does not have enough sense to value you, do not waste your time and talents there,” says Holly Rodriguez, owner and chief communications strategist of H-Rod & Associates, a public relations and marketing firm in Richmond, Va.
“It may be tough to do, but don’t make it personal, or take on the burden of trying to prove yourself to people who do not see value in you. Just like in a bad relationship, you cannot make someone love you – and in a toxic work place, you cannot make yourself valuable to people who do not value you for who you are and the talents you bring to the job in the first place. Move on, and, in the best-case scenario, do what I did – start your own thing.”
Rodriguez was fired from a position as the reporter of a very small, local newspaper.
