A Louisiana High School teacher is behind bar after being accused of having sex with and knowingly exposing a 16-year-old male student to the HIV virus. According to CBS affiliate WWL TV, Derrick Nesby, 37, was arrested last week at the H.L. Bourgeois High School in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, where he teaches.
Investigators say that a complaint regarding Nesby’s alleged involvement with the teen was first received by a school resource officer.
“We can establish the fact that there was an encounter that happened,” said Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Chief of Detectives Malcolm Wolfe. “We continued our investigation where we established more evidence that something did happen, and at that point we got a warrant for his arrest.”
During their investigation, officers learned that Nesby has AIDS—something that the teen was unaware of. Nesby, who has been teaching at the school for the past year and working as a track coach, has been charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and intentional exposure of the AIDS virus.
Although his bond was originally set at $500,000, once investigators learned that he exposed the teen to the virus, it doubled. Nesby is currently being held on a one million dollar bond and is denying all of the allegations being brought against him.
