Vicious With Vitiligo: Meet America’s Next Top Model Contestant Chantelle Young
After 21 seasons of “America’s Next Top Model,” you would think you’ve seen it all. But leave it up to Tyra to find something fresh. In the upcoming season we’ll get to watch Chantelle Young, of Toronto, Canada compete to be the next top model… I guess they’re being very loose with the “America” part. Either way, what’s so unique about Chantelle is that she is the first model to compete with the skin condition vitiligo.
And what’s so interesting about Chantelle’s personal vitiligo is that in most parts it’s rather symmetrical, making it visually interesting, striking even.
Chantelle who is 19, noticed that her skin started changing at around 3 or 4 years old. And though there were bullies and people calling her zebra and cow, she not only learned to embrace herself but decided to thrust herself into the public eye by pursuing a career in modeling. And her confidence and self assurance has paid off. As she’ll have a chance to win the coveted title of ANTM.
Chantelle says that she could remove all the brown skin and be white but can’t remove all the white skin and be brown. She says,
“If God wanted me to be black, I’d be black. If he wanted me to be white, I’d be white. But He chose for me to be both, an original. So I guess that’s what I’m supposed to be.”
Chantelle says, “A lot of people have a story or a background, but mine is painted on my body.”
Cycle 21 of “America’s Next Top Model” premieres on the CW in August. But in the meantime, get into some of her pictures. And then check out this video she was a part of three years ago for ThoseGirlsAreWild.com.
