Last summer, Ne-Yo strangely announced his break-up with ex-fiancée, Monyetta Shaw, via Instagram.
“Though fate had decided to split our romantic paths, know that I will ALWAYS love you. Forever your partner. Forever your friend. Forever my miracle,” he wrote. “I’ll always be there. ALWAYS.@incognemo Forever my miracle.”
For nearly a year, fans have been in the dark regarding what caused the split, but the “Let Me Love You” singer’s recent Breakfast Club interview may offer a bit more insight into the couple’s demise. For one, Ne-Yo and Monyetta were engaged to be married, but the now-35-year-old A&R and songwriter says he still isn’t ready to make that commitment.
“35 is just the number of years I’ve been on this planet,” he explained. “First of all, I still have a lot of maturing to do and I’m aware of it. I’m not ready for all that. One day I will be.”
He also confessed to being unfaithful in the past. And while he didn’t mention Monyetta specifically, it seems that he’s referring to their relationship and breakup.
“I didn’t get caught [cheating],” he explained. “I realized I had a problem and I have too much respect for the person I was with to continue lying to her face.”
Despite not being able to work things out in their romantic relationship, the Ne-Yo and Monyetta share two beautiful children, whom Ne-Yo gives credit for inspiring his “grind.”
“[Fatherhood] has inspired my grind. It’s definitely something that makes you get out there and work that much harder. Now if the ship sinks, everybody goes down. Before it was just me and it was like, ‘If I go down, I can re-up later own.’ Now, I have two people that depend on me that didn’t ask to be here. If I have to stay in the studio a few hours extra, so be it.”
