The Smith family knows how to hold down a summer weekend box-office. Dad Will Smith is known for his summer blockbuster movies–Independence Day, Men In Black, and Bad Boys to name a few–and now son Jaden, who stars in the Will and Jada-produced The Karate Kid remake, has a number-one movie under his belt.
The Karate Kid, also starring Taraji P. Henson and Jackie Chan, took in $56 million at the domestic box office, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com. Final figures are due out on Monday. Not too shabby, considering the movie cost a reported $40 million to make.
The A-Team (Fox), a big-screen adaptation of the action series that ran on TV from 1983-1987, finished at No. 2 with $26 million.
The 3-D animated film Shrek Forever After finished in third place, taking in $15.8 million.
