Study Reveals The Astonishingly Hefty Price Tag That Comes With Being A Wedding Guest
Wedding season is upon us. And while we’re already aware of the hefty price tag that comes with planning a wedding, who knew being a mere guest at a ceremony of love could be so expensive?
According to a recent study conducted by American Express, the average cost of attending a wedding is $592, which is up 75 percent from just two years ago. And catch this: that total isn’t even counting the gift. If the study is correct, then guests are spending nearly $600 per wedding on pre-wedding shindigs, hotels, personal grooming, clothing, transportation and accessories alone. But wait, that’s not all. The study also states that on average, a wedding guest will shell out $109 on a wedding gift and that figure doubles if the person getting married is a close relative.
As for members of the wedding party, the study reveals that on average, these lovely folks will spend $618.
“Weddings can be expensive, whether you’re tying the knot or attending as a guest,” said David Rabkin, senior vice president of Consumer Lending Products for American Express. “While careful spending continues to be the trend for 2014, consumers on both sides of the equation will shell out more.”
The study was conducted online from a random sampling of 1,503 adults. The results have a margin error of plus or minus 2.5. Apparently love does cost…a lot!
