Michael Strahan Makes His Introductory ‘GMA’ Appearance, Gets A Wheelbarrow Full Of Candy
Michael Strahan made an introductory debut on Good Morning America, talking over his hosting duties and getting lots of gifts from Robin, George and the gang, including an alarm clock with the wrong time, a wheelbarrow full of Sour Patch Kids and a giant coffee cup. He’ll start work with GMA next week.
It was only a couple of weeks ago when speculation about whether the 42-year-old Super Bowl champ would join the GMA line up hit a fever pitch. The move comes after Josh Elliott’s departure from the show, though reports say Strahan had been in talks long before that. Strahan will stay on with Live with Kelly & Michael as well.
Elliott’s departure was marked with some controversy (not Ann Curry level, but sparks nonetheless) as he left for NBC Sports and wasn’t even there when they aired a farewell video for him. The issue, of course, was money. He was making $1.2 million and wanted $8 million. ABC, RadarOnline says, would only go as high as $4 million. The move to NBC Sports is a return to sports anchoring for Elliott, who will host big events like the Olympics.
Ratings since Elliott left have actually gone up, with the show tallying 5.8 million viewers the week of March 31, 715,000 more than the Today show.
