Depending on a partner’s income, married couples may have access to financial aid opportunities that unmarried couples may not. Marriage usually has the most positive effect on students under age 24 whose spouses do not have significant income. If you claim independent status as a student, your parent’s income and assets will not be considered in your financial aid award. Your spouse’s income will be considered however, and if he isn’t bringing in much, that means more financial aid for you.
