The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has announced that Rihanna will be the organization’s 2014 Fashion Icon Award recipient. She’ll officially receive the honor on June 2nd at the organization’s gala at Lincoln Center in New York City. The Fashion Icon Award is presented in conjunction with Swarovski.
According to a press release about the honor, Rihanna was selected based on her work as a “record-breaking recording artist,” actress and fashion designer as well as her contributions to the MAC Viva Glam campaign that helps in the fight against AIDS.
Past recipients include Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman and Iman. Rihanna has come into her own both with her personal style (from evening gowns to doobie wraps) to and as a face for Balmain’s spring collection and a model in the Chanel supermarket runway show.
The CFDA also hands out a slew of fashion awards to designers across the industry. Earlier this month, nominees and other honorees were announced. Among them: Tom Ford will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, Bethann Hardison will get the Founder’s Award, and Alexander Wang, has been nominated for both Womenswear Designer of the Year and Accessories Designer of the Year.
