In December 2013, Michelle Howard became the highest ranking woman in the history of the US Navy – and the US military, reports Outside The Beltway. The Senate confirmed Vice Adm. Howard for the service’s No. 2 slot, the first female and first black woman four-star admiral in the Navy’s 238-year history.

Howard graduated the  U.S. Naval Academy in 1982 and was the first African-American woman to command a U.S. Navy ship — USS Rushmore (LSD-47) — in 1999, reports The U.S. Naval Institute News.
