When I heard that they were making a James Brown movie, I have to admit, I wasn’t with it. James Brown was no doubt a character and it certainly wouldn’t be easy to imitate him. And when I heard actor Chadwick Boseman was going to be taking the role my concerns were assuaged a bit. But then again, he’d just played Jackie Robinson. Would he be able to transform into James Brown too? I wasn’t sure.
But last night I saw the trailer and chile, I’m convinced. The biopic, Get On Up, is going to be released by Universal. This project has been a long time coming. Spike Lee was vying to direct the film with Eddie Murphy potentially as the lead. But the film which is set to come out August 1, will be led by Tate Taylor, director of The Help.
The official synopsis:
In his follow-up to the four-time Academy Award-nominated blockbuster The Help, Tate Taylor directs 42’s Chadwick Boseman as James Brown in Get on Up. Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Boseman is joined in the drama by Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd.
