More Than Money: Why Everyone Needs A Side Hustle

As a creative outlet, to feed your soul

If you have a boring job, that’s not quite fulfilling but you don’t want to rock the boat, the side hustle can help you put your energy into something you’re passionate about. And if you have a hobby you simply enjoy doing in your spare time, why not turn your hobby into a hustle?

“The first time I made a dollar from baking and selling my own cookies was in the 6th grade so this isn’t anything new for me,” Assata explained.

If you have a stable job that doesn’t require you to be on call or put in extra hours, a side hustle is the perfect way to stimulate your passion. Think of it as an extracurricular, but as an adult in the real world, you can get paid for it. Were you the kid in school who was in a million clubs but still managed to get your work done and end up on the honor roll? Well, why can’t you do it now?

A reason to keep learning

Have some free time on your hands and want to eventually create a backup plan? Or want to learn a marketable skill outside of your industry that you can use to stimulate your intellect and fuel your curiosity? Consider taking an online course on a platform like Skillcrush. They provide tech training that fits your schedule. Or, for a more academic approach, you can take graduate level courses for free on Coursera.

For new experiences

It’s cliche, but the saying goes it’s not what you know it’s who you know. If you only know the people you work with and the friends you grew up with, your social clout  becomes limited. A side hustle can introduce you to people you would never have met and expose you to opportunities you would never come across during your day job.

“I get to sit with dozens of people for 15 minutes at a time from all different walks of life and industries,” Michel told us. “I make people happy. Usually my customers were turned away from Apple, told they needed to purchase a new phone, quoted a high price by a private repair shop, or had no idea it could be repaired.”

After three years and over 1,600 iPhones, it’s safe to say he found a side hustle both he and his customers love.
