Money Questions to Ask Your Partner Before Getting Hitched

February 5, 2011  |

5. How much do you have in debt?

You need to know your net worth, as well as your spouse’s, not because you’re a golddigger (after all, black women reportedly average $5 in net worth and your spouse could be broke as hell), but because it will give both of you a starting point. Once you know where you’re starting from financially, you’ll be able to set goals for where you want to be. If you’re worth -$25,000 now and your spouse is worth -$50,000, maybe the two of you can sit down and derive an action plan as to how much you want to be worth in the next five and 10 years. If you work as a team, each of you could be worth much more than you ever imagined.
