Exclusive Interview: Regina King Doesn’t Disappoint

February 4, 2011  |

Do you consider your family’s opinion in the roles you take?

Yes and no. Really with my son, yes definitely. The rest of my family they’re grown ups. You know how to handle whatever somebody’s got to say to you. But my son, not so much. He’s still growing. You know if he gets hit with the “Yo momma something, something, something.” He gets in a fight or whatever because he’s defending his mother’s honor. That’s not fair. In a lot of ways I would have put him in that position.

I’m being faced with a situation right now, with a storyline they want to do at work. And I’m totally against it. We’re kind of having it out right now, hopefully it will end in my favor but the fact of the matter is, I signed on to do this job. My argument is that my son has to see that. Even if I did not allow him to watch the episode, his friends would see that.

We can tell you consider the roles you take. You’re representing us in a positive light, when people talk about Regina King, there’s always good things being said.

I’ve always been that way even as a little girl. When my mother punished me, she always knew that she could use something that would make me feel like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve disappointed her.’ I don’t want to disappoint. I’m one of those people that wants everyone to be happy. I don’t want anyone to be disappointed. And don’t get me wrong I’m not an idiot, running around here trying to please everybody all the time. I’m disappointed in myself if I’ve disappointed others. I also recognize it’s a flaw as much as it’s a good quality.

What’s next on the agenda?

Well right now, it’s finishing up this season of ‘Southland’ and then back on the grind of getting financing for this movie that I want to direct and produce, that my sister and I are developing through our production company. And hope to have it shot and in the can before, cross your fingers, before ‘Southland’ comes back for a fourth season. For me, I love acting but I gotta do something else.

Is it true that you directed Jaheim’s video? (Finding My Way Back)

Yes sure did. That was a very cool experience.

We were on the Mo’Nique show together and we exchanged information and a couple weeks after that he asked me if I would be in his video. And I was like ‘ooo thank you but I don’t do videos.’ And then I thought about it, and I was like well I’ll direct it, so I called him back about a week or so later and I was like is that video was still available to do because I’ll be in it if I can direct it. And he said yea, if you write the treatment for it. Can you write the treatment? And I was like oh yeah sure, knowing I had never written a treatment before. But I knew that I really wanted to direct it. It was a great challenge for myself, that was the first time I ever wrote a treatment for something. It all kind of worked out really well.
