Eight Shows to Watch for Fashion’s Sake
Although we bid farewell to Joan, Maya, Lynn and Toni in 2008, we will never forget the ups and downs of the fabulous foursome (or what they were wearing during it all). Luckily we can catch reruns on cable networks like BET. Girlfriends showed viewers everywhere that although sometimes sistas bicker and bash each other they are always there for one another through thick and thin. The sitcom also showed the beautiful versatility of the black woman with characters that were all educated and successful with professional careers.
Stacy Beverly (yep, the same Stacey Beverly who works as a costume designer for “The Game”) tailored looks that fit each one of the character’s different personalities. Joan was the overachieving, type-A personality lawyer that eventually found faith in the freedom of not always having a plan. When she wasn’t in the courtroom, she carried off a bohemian chic style with ethnically-edgy accessories, huge handbags and garments straight off the racks of “Free People”.
Ms. Toni Childs was a successful real-estate agent who look only spoke the languages of Prada and Chanel. She could be found closing on houses while elegantly dressed in the latest labels.
Maya was the round-the-way girl who screamed “Oh, hell yes!” all the way to the suburbs by becoming an author of a novel of the same name. Tank tops, flowy dresses and denim showed off a svelte figure and fiery attitude.
Lynn was the free-spirit of the group who made being lost look so lovely. Her style was often composed of trademark black pieces that were mysterious, Hot and showed of tattoos in unlikely places. If I had friends who dressed like these ladies, I’d do all of my shopping in their closets.
